Citações: The Hottest State

“It's kind of like this. You wake up in the middle of the night and you're dying for a glass of milk. So you stumble out of bed, stub your toe in the darkness, scream with pain, and limp your way to the refrigerator. You open it up and the light is brilliant. You're saved. Then you fold back the paper container, open up the milk, take a deep breath, and put it to your lips. Only --- yhrch! --- the milk is spoiled. Sure, you're bummed. You fold the thing close and put it back in the fridge. It's dark again. But as you're making your way to your lonely old bed, you think to yourself, Wait a minute, maybe that milk wasn't so bad. And I am still thirsty? So you do an about-face and go back to the fridge. The light warms you up again. You take a sip and yup, it's still spoiled. That, to me, is the fitting metaphor for most every relationship I've ever been in.”

MacGyver Hugs

Total Recall's The Fall Math

I did the math, and I'm curious what you guys think.

In order to travel 8000 miles through the earth in 17 minutes, the Fall would have to maintain an average speed of roughly 28286.5 miles per hour. The way to achieve that average speed with the most gradual acceleration possible would be to accelerate to twice that speed at the core, then instantly begin decelerating back to zero over the second half of the trip.

This means that the Fall would have to achieve a speed of 56,573 miles per hour halfway through the trip, in 8 1/2 minutes or 510 seconds.

56573 miles per hour is 25,274 meters per second. To achieve that in 510 seconds requires an acceleration of 49.55 meters per second squared.

49.55 meters per second squared is only 5.05 G, but the movie is still ridiculous.

The moment the fall is released, it would have to have massive engines fire, around half what would be needed to launch it into space. Everyone onboard would be pulling negative 5 Gs for eight and a half minutes. The instant it started, Quaid would have been stuck to the ceiling with a weight of over a thousand pounds (assuming he weighs two hundred even, which seems reasonable). And he would have weighed over 1000 pounds for more than eight minutes, as if his heart could withstand that. Then he would have been weightless for only an instant, then stuck on the damn ceiling with 1000 pounds of force again because they flipped the cabin.

Untrained civilians generally suffer loss of consciousness somewhere between 4 and 6 G, but that's positive G. Negative G's like depicted in this film cause what is called redout, or increased blood pressure to the brain and eyes. It can cause severe retinal damage or hemorrhagic stroke. I think the effect would be similar to what happened to Arnie's head in the first Total Recall, which ironically enough is not what would happen if he had actually been exposed to the Martian atmosphere.

Sinceramente...
